Suresh R. Limaye is a recently retired professor of ophthalmology. He lives in Virigina with his wife Nirmala (a retired obstetrics and gynecology physician).
Suresh has vast experience as a physician who has practiced in multiple countries in both teaching hospitals as well as in private practice. He has worked in India, in the UK and in several hospitals in the USA. Before embarking on private practice in Arlington, VA, he was the Chief of Ophthalmology section at the General Hospital in Washington D.C.
Based on his visits in 2010 with local ophthalmologists in Pune, India, Suresh began to formulate his vision to establish a center there for the diagnosis and management of retinal degenerative and hereditary diseases. Patients suffering from these diseases are partially or totally blind, and there is a critical need for access to genetic testing and diagnosis, and treatment, referrals and counseling facilities locally. In 2011, Suresh began to put together a plan to gather various resources (including program personnel, suitable venue, equipment, community outreach and awareness-raising initiatives, travel funds, and facilities) to train ophthalmologists as well as paramedical personnel to assist local ophthalmologists to ably serve in such a new center in Pune.
In the context of finding support for the implementation of these specific training program objectives, Suresh was referred (via CARTHA Ambassador Arlene Drack, a pediatric ophthalmologist in Iowa City who used to be Suresh’s student) to CARTHA founder Usha Balakrishnan. As kindred spirits wishing to advance a variety of global health objectives, Suresh and Usha then began to design a new collaborative program which would strengthen the outcomes of Suresh's aspirations with regard to the new center in Pune. Suresh joined as a CARTHA Council of Advisor in April 2011.
