Ivy Donaldson Soberanis

Ivy first met Usha Balakrishnan in 2008 while attending a seminar organized as part of the Winterim India programs designed by CARTHA Ambassador Raj Rajagopal. Given Ivy's strong interest in international business, microfinance, social entrepreneurship, sustainability, logistics and supply chain, she was immediately attracted to CARTHA's work and mission.

Ivy has 8 years of international and domestic research and internship experience. She has conducted research on modeling large-scale supply chain disruption using Bayesian Networks. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Business at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.

Ivy was born and raised in Jamaica and has lived in the United States since 1998. She is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa with a doctorate in Industrial Engineering. She received her BA in Mathematics and Economics and a minor in Business Administration from Queens College, City University of New York in 2001 and her MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 2004. Ivy has been the recipient of various awards including the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Fellowship (GAANN), the Woodrow Wilson Travel and Research Grant and the 2009-2010 AHETEMS Dissertation Fellowship.

Ivy has served on various boards and committees including the University of Iowa Energy and Conservation Advisory council, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter at the University of Iowa. She has also tutored k-12 students through the Multi-ethnic Engineering and Sciences Association (MESA) tutoring program in Iowa City, Iowa. While serving as the Vice President of the Multi-ethnic Engineering and Sciences Association (MESA) at the University of Iowa, the organization was nominated and awarded the Hawkeye Student Organization Leadership and Service Award. Ivy was also awarded the Luther Smith Honorable Service Award for student leadership and received an honorable mention at the US EPA's National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington DC in May 2006.

Her professional and scientific membership include the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) and Engineers without Borders (EWB).
