Dr. Steve Froggett currently is an advisor to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in the office of scientific and technical affairs within the Foreign Agricultural Service. Steve serves in multiple capacities; as the Biotechnology Facilitator for the US-Indo Agriculture Knowledge Initiative, and as a representative for the Foreign Agricultural Service at international and national policy forums on nanobiotechnology and synthetic biotechnology. Steve’s regional portfolio, handling matters related to new technologies and production methods within agriculture and their relation to international trade, is focused on central and south Asia.

Before coming to USDA, Steve was a visiting scientist at the University of Nairobi, College of Health Sciences, Kenya, where he started a pediatric HIV research laboratory in collaboration with the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. During this time, Steve held dual appointments at the Hutchinson Center as a research associate and at the University of Washington Medical School as a senior fellow of the John E. Fogarty international HIV research and training program.

Previously, Steve lived and worked in Nepal. During this time, Steve was an Assistant Professor of Physiology at the Kathmandu University Medical School directing physiology and neurobiology courses, serving as a problem based learning facilitator and assisting with curriculum development. At present, Steve retains close to ties to the medical community in Nepal and serves on the Board of Directors for the Patan Academy of Health Sciences, as the chair of financial development committee.

In 2002, Steve completed his doctorate in neurobiology and behavior at the University of Massachusetts where he used genetics and electrophysiology to research the molecular mechanisms involved in nervous system development, plasticity and degeneration. Steve also holds a masters of science from the University of North Carolina for his investigations in the roles of nitric oxide pharmacology on nervous system development.
