Ashmedh holds dual engineering degrees from Northwestern University in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering.
He currently lives in North Carolina, but grew up as a global denizen, spending his early childhood in India
and Africa before moving to the US at an early age.
Ashmedh's professional interests arise from his experiences in the healthcare technology development and
marketing fields. During the last decade, he worked in Scotland, England, and Germany, thereby garnering significant
experiences in business development, marketing, and sales in global settings. While in Munich, Ashmedh turned
around a struggling division at BrainLAB, a pioneer in image-guided surgery. Ashmedh created and deployed
global strategic marketing and sales plans to spearhead the division’s growth. Most recently, Ashmedh was
engaged by Zimmer where he championed growth by embracing open innovation models, conducted due diligence on
external partnerships/technologies, while also bringing new orthopedic trauma implant products to the market.
Early in his career, Ashmedh was engaged in commercializing university technology focused on Microarrays, a
complex technology used to rapidly identify gene expression profiles.
Ashmedh loves the outdoors. He picked up his sailing hobby while in Scotland in addition to golf (though
he admits he still feels more like a landscaper than a golfer!) He has played tennis since an early age and
plays basketball, football, and ultimate Frisbee recreationally as well. Most recently he scaled Mt. Washington
and aspires to conquer greater heights and someday complete the Appalachian Trail.
Ashmedh’s intersection with CARTHA was pure serendipity in April 2010. As his career interests evolved,
Ashmedh began to actively seek out avenues to align his passion for medical technology and its transformative
effect on people's lives with a desire to be in an environment that was devoid of rigid frameworks and allowed
creativity to be nurtured. Ashmedh came upon CARTHA's name in a pdf document on Canadian innovation while
googling for socially-minded early stage technology companies. Ashmedh then reached out to CARTHA’s founder
Usha Balakrishnan, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ashmedh and Usha began to collaborate in multiple
ways. Ashmedh hopes his association with CARTHA will allow him to fulfill his aspirations to enhance
humanitarian objectives through his professional endeavors.
